Sounds in the Night.

The cool dampness affected the smell of the room. Not unpleasant but not fresh. This, however, is soon forgotten as, in the semi darkness, all that was present was the myriad of sounds that plagued the room.

The ceiling above creaked and groaned from the occupant upstairs, only echoed by the occasional cough. The bird chorus of car horns angrily, or at least unharmoniously, rang out outside the easily forgotten, small window. “Ding dong”, announced the nearby elevator.

The loudest competitor was the regular, outburst of rumbles from the wall at the foot of the bed. It hissed and whirred and then stopped as abruptly as it began.

More car horns echoed into the night, some answered but most alone. All different.

Another “Ding Dong”. The only human sounds inside the room came from the occasional rustle of bed sheets and the sighs of two people desperately trying to go to sleep even though neither were tired and both of them knew it.

Through all this, a faint and unplaceable humming could still be heard. Quietly and relentlessly continuing on into the night; invading the precious gaps of silence left behind by the rest, and reminding you that you are in an unfamiliar but exciting place.
